Make sure birds have enough water during dry spells

Keep new and young plants well watered

Feed and water all plants grown in containers regularly

Deadhead flowers

Water vegetables regularly

Lift new potatoes, onions, and garlic, and pinch out runner beans when they reach the top of their canes

Pick raspberries and currents

Harvest herbs

Keep greenhouses well ventilated and damp down regularly

Keep harvesting vegetables as soon as they are ready

Begin harvesting shallots

Harvest onions when the leaves begin to turn yellow and flop

Harvest globe artichokes before the scales begin to open

Harvest garlic planted last year

It’s not too late to sow vegetables for autumn – sow lettuce, beetroot, carrots and turnips

Sow autumn and winter salads

Continue sowing peas until the end of the month

Finish planting out winter brassicas sown in April and May

Sow spring cabbages

Pick herbs regularly to maintain a supply of fresh, young roots

Pick and dry herbs

Take cuttings from herbs such as lemon verbena, sage, and thyme
